Program Overview

    Welcome to our site!

Conference Objective:

    To offer a top-notched
program that will expose the
participants to State-of-the-Art
knowledge on a variety of
cardio-pulmonary issues.

This year we will focus on Women's Heart & Lung Health

Introduction

Today, about 1 out of every 5 women in America smokes, even though we know smoking is not good for our health. And, women are starting to smoke at younger and younger ages. Did you know that lung cancer kills more women every year than breast cancer? Did you also know that smoking could affect more than just your lungs? Smoking can increase your risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis (thinning or weakening of your bones), and cancers other than lung cancer.

It can also affect your ability to get pregnant. Smoking when you are pregnant increases your chances of having problems with your pregnancy, including premature or early birth and having a baby with low birth weight.

Fast Facts

bullet

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

bullet

Unlike so many other conditions or diseases, you have the power to prevent yourself from smoking-related illnesses or death. The benefits of not smoking start within days of quitting.

bullet

In 1999, about 165,000 women died prematurely from smoking-related diseases, like cancer and heart disease.

bullet

Twenty-two million of the smokers in this country are women.

bullet

At least 1.5 million adolescent girls in the U.S. smoke cigarettes.

bullet

Every day, about 3,000 young people under the age of 18 become smokers.

Women's Heart AdvantageWhat is the single biggest health issue facing women today?

Cancer? Osteoporosis? Arthritis?

None of these. It’s heart disease. Surprised? Most people are. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for women (men, too). A recent nationwide survey found that fewer than one in five of all women express concerns about heart health to their physicians. Fewer than one in three women even realize that heart disease is their greatest health risk. The numbers are astounding:

bulletCardiovascular disease claims the lives of more than 500,000 women in the United States each year, striking more women than the next seven causes of death combined, and almost twice as many as all forms of cancer.
bulletHalf of all women will die of heart disease or stroke, compared with one in 30 who will die of breast cancer.
bulletMore women than men have died of cardiovascular disease every year since 1984, and more women die within a year of having a heart attack than do men.

Applying for 15 MD CME hours and 15 RT CEU hours.

This conference offers a nationally known faculty presenting cutting edge topics in the areas of Cardio- Pulmonary Medicine, Respiratory and Critical Care.  We realize how difficult it is for physicians and other busy health care professionals to get out of the office to advance their knowledge. Our goal is to offer a top-notch 2-day program in an attractive setting, one that will provide a “learning get-away” for registrants as well as fun activities for their families.

Check back frequently to see how our program is developing.  We are now finalizing our faculty.  We hope to have the final program posted by mid-December.

Some talks will be for a general audience, to allow something of interest to a spouse or guest, or to just to break up the day.  A mix of plenary lectures and smaller group workshops will be offered. To enhance the learning experience, some plenary sessions will feature an interactive component.

Interactive Panel Discussion

A highlight of Pulmonary Teaching Conference has always been the interactive panel discussion, where visiting faculty provide questions that are either controversial, or the conventional wisdom is wrong.  Audience member’s keypad their responses and the panel reacts in real time to the answers.  Discussion on the teaching point follows, which makes for a lively and spontaneous session.
