Brian Carlin, MD, FCCP

            

Brian Carlin received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania and his medical doctorate degree from the Pennsylvania State University.  He completed an internal medicine residency and chief medical residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, and then completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of California at San Diego.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Drexel University School of Medicine and is a senior staff physician at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He maintains board certification in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine.

Dr. Carlin is a past president of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and is the current President of the Heart and Lung Foundation within that organization.  He is also active within the American College of Chest Physicians being a member of the Health Science and Policy Committee and the vice chair of the Affiliates’ NetWork.  He has just completed a four year term as the Governor of Pennsylvania for the organization.  In addition he has been appointed as the ACCP representative to the National Board of Respiratory Care. 

Dr. Carlin is active within his local community (working with Allegheny General Hospital and the American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania) being involved with the early detection of lung disease.

bulletGender differences in COPD. 
    This talk would focus on the issues involving differences in the physiology, development, and diagnosis of COPD between men and women. It would also focus on the rising mortality in women from COPD.
bulletPulmonary rehabilitation and women. 
    This talk (in conjunction with the COPD discussion) would focus on the use of pulmonary rehabilitation in women and discuss those issues pertinent to women in the development of an individualized program of rehabilitation.

These talks will focus on the impact of COPD on women and the importance of pulmonary rehabilitation in the management of women with COPD.  Implications for the performance of pulmonary rehabilitation with emphasis on gender specific issues will be discussed.
