George Burton, MD

 

Dr. Burton is Associate Dean for Medical Affairs at the Kettering College of Medical Arts , in Dayton, Ohio where he is also Medical Director of Sleep Disorders Center and Emeritus Medical Director of Respiratory Care Services.

He is a fellow of The American College of Physicians, the AARC, and The American College of Chest Physicians. He has authored 7 textbooks, and more than 70 scientific publications.

While at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in the late 1960’s his Pulmonary Rehabilitation Group was the first to publish results that demonstrated reduced utilization of health care resources in patient who had completed a week long course of education, exercise conditioning, and symptom awareness.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Patient Education in the Era of Therapist-Driven Protocols

 Objectives: 

  1. The conclusion of the presentation, the learner will be able to state and describe: A. Pulmonary Rehabilitation outcomes that have survived the scrutiny of the IOM evidence-based medicine analysis.
  1. Which specific pulmonary rehabilitation activities have faired well under such scrutiny.
  1. A patient- specific pulmonary rehabilitation “menu selection” process, based on patient characteristics, that I may be constituted under the Therapist-Driven Protocol (TDP) paradigm
  1. His/ her awareness that each modality-specific TDP, whether the patient is “ in Pulmonary Rehab” or not, must end in a patient education module to be effective in the long run.
