Discussion of ‘transfusion triggers’ and the more recent rational for restrictive transfusion protocols. Reviewed also will be methods to minimize phlebotomy and methods to enhance RBC production in the critically ill patient.  Presented will be data from a current erythopoietin project including cost and quality data.

Objectives:

To be able to distinguish between tolerable and acceptable hematocrits and to identify specific population in which these two values are not identical.

To be able to identify methods to minimize blood loss from phlebotomy.

To be able to identify reasons for blunted marrow response in the critically ill patient.
