The Northeast Pulmonary Teaching Conference

The American Lung Association of Central New York and the New York State Society for Respiratory Care

Jim Fink, MS, RRT, FAARC

Jim is presently a Fellow in Respiratory Science at Aerogen, Inc. in Sunnyvale, CA. Jim has been widely published in aerosol delivery systems, and has chaired the Asthma Consortium in Chicago. His informative presentation at last year’s ALA Teaching Day on “Bronchodilator Rescue in the ED" was well received, and we look forward to his expertise in implementing successful community asthma coalitions.

Jim has taken an active interest in clinical applications of aerosols, over the last three decades. Jim has served as participating author in the AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines on Aerosols and the more recent Consensus Conference on Aerosols and Delivery Devices.

His research interests range from aerosol delivery during mechanical ventilation to proper device selection and training for patients at home.

Heliox and Aerosols in the ICU

A review of limitations of aerosol therapy as commonly administered in the ICU, and an exploration of evidence supporting newer therapeutic approaches, with emphasis on the role of Helium Oxygen during mechanical ventilation and continuous nebulization.

Objectives:

bullet

Discuss how heliox increases aerosol delivery but decreases jet nebulizer output.

bullet

Identify systems for effectively delivering Heliox to patients in the ICU.

bullet

Describe critieria for ventilator or nebulizer selection for use with Heliox.

New Frontiers in Aerosol Medicine

A critical look at technical and pharmaceutical advances that will transform aerosol therapy over the next decade.  We will explore the evolution of aerosol generators, and devices currently in development, and preview the array of drugs being developed for both respiratory and systemic delivery.

 Objectives:

bullet

Discuss how breath actuated nebulizers effect inhaled dose and treatment times.

bullet

Describe limitations of current passive DPIs, and how active DPIs allow consistent drug delivery despite low inspiratory flow rates.

bulletIdentify three inhaled drugs being studied for systemic therapy
