Bob Kacmarek is Director, Respiratory Care Department,
Massachusetts General Hospital, and is Associate Professor, Department of
Anesthesia, Harvard Medical School. He
has published many textbooks in Respiratory Care and is a very active writer and
researcher. He lectures widely and
is very involved in national committee work.
Lung Recruitment
Content: This presentation will focus on the approaches used to recruit
collapsed lung and the subsequent setting of PEEP. Emphasis will be on the
importance of keeping the lung Safety and efficacy of the published
approaches will be discussed. Overall guidelines for lung recruitment will be
provided.
Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation the attendee will be able
to:
 | Discuss the rationale for performing lung recruitment maneuvers. |
 | Discuss the various approaches to performing lung recruitment and the
importance of the approach used to set PEEP post lung recruitment. |
 | Discuss the safety and efficacy of lung recruitment maneuvers. |
New Modes of Ventilation: Where Do They Fit!
Content: This lecture will focus on the new modes of ventilation available on
current generation mechanical ventilators. Specifically, information regarding
volume support, pressure regulated volume control, automatic tube compensation,
and volume assured pressure support will be discussed. Advantages and
disadvantages of each will be addressed.
Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation the attendees will be able
to:
 | Define and discuss the operation of the new modes of ventilation. |
 | Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new modes of
ventilation. |
 | Discuss when the new modes of ventilation may be useful clinically. |
