Robert L. Berkowitz, MD PhD, FACC, is founder and Medical Director of the Heart Failure Program at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. Dr. Berkowitz received his MD from Yale University Medical School and his PhD in cellular-molecular biology from the University of California, Davis. His residency in Internal Medicine was completed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. His fellowship training was in cardiology and heart failure at the same institutions.
Dr. Berkowitz is a member of the Greater New York Heart Failure
Consortium and has been involved in numerous clinical research trials such as
COMPANION – A Comparison of Medical Therapy, Pacing and Defibrillation in
Heart Failure. He is also on the
advisory board of FUSION – Follow-up Serial Infusions of Natrecor in advanced
heart failure patients. Dr.
Berkowitz has published multiple articles concerned with both systolic and
diastolic heart failure.
His heart failure program is a recent recipient of the Robert Wood
Johnson Pursuing Perfection grant. Dr.
Berkowitz recently received the award for Physician Research Achievement from
the Home Health Assembly of New Jersey and was also recognized for outstanding
clinical and research achievement by the New Jersey State Assembly.
Dr. Berkowitz is a lecturer at Grand Rounds at various hospitals and
